What Is Soy Allergy ?

Soy is basically a product of soybeans. Soy allergy is common, and is characterized by an allergic reaction in response to soy. The specific food allergy usually begins in infancy, whereas many children manage to outgrow it, whilst others continue to become allergic.

Mild symptoms triggered by soy allergy generally include:

  • Itching around and in your mouth.
  • Hives.

Quire rarely, soy allergy tends to result in anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that needs to be treated on immediate basis. In case your child reacts to soy, do not take it lightly; instead, get your child medically evaluated. Tests are used to ascertain the allergy.

Indeed, the best prevention is avoidance. Though, avoiding all food items which contain soy can be impossible. Some sources of soy include:

  • Breakfast cereals.
  • Chocolate.
  • Bakery goods.
  • Meat products.

What Are The Symptoms Of Soy Allergy ?

Soy allergy tends to be common in children, particularly infants and toddlers. For many, soy allergy is distressing, though, not life-threatening. Quite rarely, soy allergy leads to any complication. After consuming a food item that contain soy, people with the allergy develop symptoms within some minutes to hours. Common symptoms include:

  • Skin itching and redness.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Runny nose.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Tingling in mouth.
  • Wheezing.

Breathing difficulties.

Swelling on tongue, face and lips.

Hives.

Eczema.

As mentioned earlier, soy allergy can rarely lead to anaphylaxis. Though, People with other food allergies or asthma are more prone to experience anaphylaxis. The condition sources more extreme symptoms.

What Causes Soy Allergy ?

The reaction of immune system is responsible for triggering allergies to specific foods. In case of a soy allergy, the immune system finds specific proteins in soy as dangerous, consequently instigating the making of antibodies. Second time, after you are exposed to your allergen, soy, the antibodies identify it, whilst indicate the immune system to release certain chemicals including histamine into the bloodstream. The release of chemicals manages to develop the symptoms of soy allergy.

What Are The Risk Factors Of Soy Allergy ?

Though, anyone can develop allergy to soy, yet few factors are known to increase your chances of developing soy allergy, these are:

  • Family history of other allergies.
  • Being allergic to some other food.

How Is Soy Allergy Diagnosis ?

First of all, the health care provider will conduct a thorough physical examination of the patient and will need complete details regarding his or her symptoms. Possibly, the doctor will then suggest either or both of the below mentioned tests:

  • Blood test.
  • Skin test.

How Is Soy Allergy Treatment ?

Avoidance is the best prevention. Though, in case of developing symptoms after consuming the so-containing food accidentally, seek medical aid. Medications for example antihistamines are known to ease the symptoms triggered by the allergic reaction. In case of anaphylaxis, the patient needs immediate medical assistance in the emergency room.
