What is delayed ejaculation?

Impaired ejaculation or delayed ejaculation is a medical condition wherein a man takes prolonged sexual stimulation period for reaching sexual peak and ejaculating. Few males with the condition are incapable to even ejaculate.  Clearly, DE can be a permanent or temporary problem. Its possible causes include medications, surgeries or chronic health conditions. However; its treatment depends upon its causal trigger. The condition is considered normal if it occurs from time to time however it can be a major concern if it’s continuous, affecting your sexual life.

What are the symptoms of delayed ejaculation?

Few males with the condition would take around half an hour of sexual stimulation for having orgasm- ejaculate, while others may not even ejaculate at all. However, in some common form of the condition, a male does not reach orgasm during the intercourse, however may ejaculate by manual or oral stimulation of his penis. Furthermore, some males would ejaculate by masturbating only.

What causes delayed ejaculation?

Medications, surgeries, and specific health conditions (chronic) are known for causing delayed ejaculation. Moreover, mental health issues for example stress, anxiety and depression is also considered for triggering the condition. Combination of psychological and physical concerns may also root delayed ejaculation.

Few physical causes are:

  • Heart disease.
  • Prostate surgery,
  • Specific infections.
  • Injury to your pelvic nerves.
  • Specific birth defects that tend to affect the reproductive system of a man.
  • Urinary tract infection.
  • Conditions related to hormone for example low testosterone.
  • Neurological diseases for example stroke or diabetic neuropathy.
  • Prostate infection.

Few psychological causes are:

  • Anxiety or depression.
  • Stress about performance.
  • Relationship issues because of poor communication or stress.
  • Religious or cultural taboos.

Other substances and medications known for leading delayed ejaculation are:

  • Consuming excessive alcohol.
  • Certain antipsychotic drugs,
  • Specific diuretics.
  • Specific medications for high blood pressure.
  • Numerous antidepressant types.

What are the risk factors of delayed ejaculations?

A man is more likely to face delayed ejaculation if:

  • He is above 40 years of age.
  • He has anxiety or depression.
  • Has certain medical condition for example multiple sclerosis or diabetes.
  • Had prostate surgery.
  • Takes certain medications for high blood pressure.
  • Takes certain antidepressants.
  • Has a relationship problem.
  • Use drugs or drink too much alcohol.

What are the possible complications of delayed ejaculation?

Complications associated with the condition include:

  • Stress regarding the sexual performance.
  • Diminished pleasure.
  • Relationship or marital problems because of disappointing sex life.
  • Male infertility.

How is delayed ejaculation diagnosed?

The doctor will need the medical history of the patient in order to identify the condition. Moreover, he will also perform a physical exam before suggesting the treatment. If the condition appears to be triggered due to a causal problem, which needs treatment, he would recommend the following tests:

  • Physical exam.
  • Urine tests.
  • Blood tests.

TREATMENT:

In order to prepare a treatment plan for the patient, the doctor need to find out what is causing delayed ejaculation. Its treatment depends upon the causal problem. The treatment options for delayed ejaculation include:

  • Medications: The doctor can prescribe medications if an antidepressant is leading the condition. There is no specific medicine to treat delayed ejaculation however medications can be prescribed to treat the causal problem. Few of which include cyproheptadine, Buspirone and Amantadine.
  • If a mental health problem is causing the condition, psychological counseling can help.
