What Is Ebstein’s Anomaly?

Ebstein’s Anomaly is a congenital heart defect in which the septal and posterior leaflets of the tricuspid valve are displaced towards the apex of the right ventricle of the heart.

Ebstein’s Anomaly may also lead to enlargement of the heart or heart failure.

Causes Of Ebstein’s Anomaly:

The reason for the occurrence of Ebstein’s Anomaly is yet unknown.

However, the following factors increase the likelihood of developing Ebstein’s Anomaly:

  • Genetic factors
  • Family history
  • Environmental factors
  • Mother’s exposure to certain medications, such as lithium or benzodiazepines

Symptoms Of Ebstein’s Anomaly:

The following symptoms are exhibited in case of severe Ebstein’s Anomaly:

  • Shortness of breath, especially with exertion
  • Fatigue
  • Heart palpitations or abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
  • A bluish discoloration of the lips and skin caused by low oxygen (cyanosis)
