What Is Intermittent Explosive Disorder?

The disorder is characterized by recurrent episodes of violent, aggressive and impulsive comportment. People with intermittent explosive disorder will involve in angry outbursts wherein they respond a situation revoltingly out of proportion. Its signs may include temper tantrums, breaking or throwing things and domestic abuse. Individuals with the disorder can assault others and their belongings, ending up in physical injury and damage to their belongings. People with intermittent explosive disorder can also hurt themselves. They may feel embarrassed, apologetic and guilty later.

Treatment can involve psychotherapy and medications to manage aggressive impulses.

What Are The Symptoms Of Intermittent Explosive Disorder?

Often, explosive eruptions tend to last for at least 20-25 minutes. They may consequent in:

  • Verbal assaults.
  • Intentional damage of property.
  • Injuries.

  • Genetics: possibilities of a genetic component tend to exist where intermittent explosive disorder is transmitted from the parents to their children.
  • Environment: It is observed that majority individuals with the disorder were raised in families where physical and verbal abuse was common. Thus, being exposed to such explosive behavior increases the tendency of developing same traits.
  • Brain chemistry: Possibilities of variation exists in the manner serotonin works in individuals with the disorder. Serotonin is a chemical messenger in our brain.

  • Physical abuse: individuals who have gone through several traumatic events or were abused as children are more probable to develop the disorder.

What Are The Complications Of Intermittent Explosive Disorder?

The disorder raises the risk of following:

  • Impaired relationships.
  • Self-destruction.
  • Trouble at school, home or work.

How Is Intermittent Explosive Disorder Diagnosed?

After being detailed with the symptoms, the doctor can carry out psychological evaluation and physical exam in order to find out what’s actually causing the symptoms. Results will indeed reveal intermittent explosive disorder.
