Home Remedies For Keratosis Pilaris

A skin disorder with small bumps and rough patches found on cheeks, arms, legs, thighs and buttocks is called keratosis pilaris. Bumps can become inflamed, red, dry or chapped. The keratosis pilaris affects people who are overweight as well as women during pregnancy, puberty, and childbirth. Keratosis pilaris (KP) is related to eczema as well as other dry skin conditions. Plus, during the winter months, this condition tends to worsen. Though there’s  no known treatment for keratosis pilaris, a few over-the-counter lotions and creams can help to treat this problem. Also, you can try some easy and natural home remedies. Below are some natural home remedies to deal with the condition.

1. Epsom Salt

Basically, Epsom salt is useful for your overall health and beauty as well. Particularly, it helps to soften dry, hard skin, removes toxins, soothes itching,  relieves stress and reduces inflammation since it rich in minerals. To use Epsom salt for keratosis pilaris, you need to stir Epsom salt (1 cup) in warm bath water. Later soak in it for around twenty minutes and pat dry the skin. Finally, apply coconut oil or a moisturizer. Do this a couple of times a week. Alternatively, mix Epsom salt (1 handful) with olive oil (1 tablespoon).  Scrub the skin with the mixture one to two times per week. People with heart problems or diabetes or high blood pressure should not use Epsom salt baths.

2. Sea Salt

Using a sea salt scrub to exfoliate the skin can help to soften rough skin and unclog the skin pores as well. Plus, sea salt has the minerals that promote skin health and eliminate toxins from your skin. All you need to do is mixing almond or grapeseed oil (1/2 cup) and grapefruit Essential oil (1 tablespoon) in sea salt (1 cup). Dampen the skin afterward and scrub gently with this mixture. Wash it off and finally, apply a moisturizer. It’s suggested to follow  this 1-2times a week.

3. Olive Oil

Another popular treatment for keratosis pilaris is using olive oil. This oil is good for moisturizing your skin and is also loaded with vitamin E. Olive oil can also be mixed with honey and sugar to form a skin scrub. For this aim, take some extra-virgin olive oil and apply it a few times per day on the skin on a regular basis. Alternatively, you can mix extra-virgin olive oil (2 tablespoons), sugar (2 tablespoons) and honey (1 teaspoon) to create a natural scrub. Rub this mixture on the skin gently and wash it off. Finally, moisturize the skin. You need to follow this remedy 1-2 times per week for best results.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Another home remedy for keratosis pilaris is using apple  cider vinegar (ACV). ACV is great for treating keratosis pilaris bumps because it contains the astringent properties that help to unclog the skin pores. In addition, it is good for the overall health. For this purpose, mix organic apple cider vinegar with water in equal parts. Apply this combination on the affected area. Leave it on for several minutes and wash it off. You should repeat a couple of times every day until you’re satisfied with the results. Alternatively, you can mix apple cider vinegar (1/2 cup) with coconut oil (1/2 cup). Then, add soy lecithin (1 tablespoon) and now apply this ointment on your affected skin every day. Another option is to add 1 teaspoon of unfiltered raw ACV to 1 glass of water. After that, consume it 1-2 times per day.

5. Coconut Oil

One of the most effective home remedies for keratosis pilaris is using pure, virgin coconut oil due to its moisturizing properties. It also promotes glowing skin and gives antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits. For this purpose, you can take some coconut oil and apply it on the skin a few times per day, particularly after bathing when the skin is till moist in order to help remain the moisture. Alternatively, consume 1 tsp of coconut oil every day. You can increase the quantity to up to 3 tablespoons a day. Another option is to mix 1 part each of brown sugar and white sugar, 1-2 tsp of honey and 2 parts of coconut oil. Rub the mixture on the skin gently to exfoliate. Then, wash it off and moisturize your skin. It’s suggested to use it 1-2 times a week.

6. Baking Soda

The best home remedies for keratosis must include baking soda. Baking soda is a great exfoliant to get rid of dead skin cells blocking the pores, thus helping to remove bumps on your skin. For this purpose, you need to mix enough water in 2 tsp of baking soda to form a paste. Later dampen the skin and scrub with this paste gently in a circular motion. Use warm water to wash it off and moisturize the skin. Repeat several times per week.

7. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is also another fabulous ingredient for skin care  because it soothes itchy, dry skin. You can also use it as a good skin scrub to remove the dead skin cells. For keratosis pilaris treatment, you grind 1/3 cup of oatmeal in a coffee grinder or food processor to a fine powder. Then, add the powder to warm bath water. Now soak in it for around 15-20 minutes. It’s recommended to do this one time a week. Alternatively, you can mix 1 tbsp of oatmeal with warm water to make a paste. Gently rub the paste on the skin and wait for fifteen minutes. Finally, wash it off and moisturize the skin. You need to repeat the remedy several times a week.

8. Sour Cream

Sour cream is also another wonderful remedy for keratosis pilaris. Sour cream aids in exfoliating the skin to eliminate the buildup of keratin thanks to its lactic acid. When combined with sugar, sour cream makes a good skin scrub. For this purpose, mix 1 tsp of brown or white sugar and 2 tsp of sour cream together. Apply the mixture on your affected skin and scrub gently in a circular motion. Wait for a few minutes and wash it off. It’s suggested to follow it a few times per week. You can apply either of buttermilk and yogurt because they also contain lactic acid.
